Synchronous pumping plays a crucial role in the operation of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and mode-locked lasers, especially when dealing with ultrashort pulses. This method involves delivering the pump light in the form of synchronized ultrashort pulses, aligning them with the pulses circulating within the device.

Synchronous Pumping in Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPOs)

For OPOs, synchronous pumping is essential for generating ultrashort pulses since these devices cannot store pump energy for later use. The synchronization requires a precise match between the pump pulse repetition rate and the round-trip frequency of the OPO resonator, particularly crucial for femtosecond pulses. Any deviation from perfect synchronism can lead to timing discrepancies between pump and signal pulses, affecting the output pulse energy and stability of the OPO.

In some cases, the signal wavelength of the OPO adjusts automatically to match the pump repetition rate, allowing tuning of the output wavelength by adjusting the resonator length.
