A Babinet–Soleil compensator is a device that consists of three birefringent plates made from the same material, typically crystalline quartz. It is used as an adjustable waveplate, also known as a retarder plate.

Functionality of the Compensator

The compensator contains one plane-parallel plate and two wedges, with the optical axis orientation of the wedges perpendicular to that of the plane-parallel plate. By adjusting the position of one of the wedges, the effective thickness of the compensator can be changed, leading to a tunable degree of retardation.

When the overall optical path length in the wedges matches that in the plane-parallel plate, the compensator provides zero retardance, meaning there is no change in the polarization direction of a beam. By adjusting the position of the movable wedge, retardance of either sign can be achieved within a certain range.

Applications of the Babinet–Soleil Compensator

The Babinet–Soleil compensator can be utilized in a variety of applications where variable retardation is required for a fixed wavelength or precise amounts of retardation are needed for variable wavelengths. Examples include ellipsometry and polarimetry.

Moreover, the compensator can be used to measure the retardance of other optical elements by determining the additional retardance needed for compensation. Anti-reflection coatings on the plates help minimize reflection losses and interference effects.

Alternative Waveplate Realizations

Aside from the Babinet–Soleil compensator, there are other types of tunable waveplates available. For instance, the Berek compensator consists of a single uniaxial crystal that can introduce variable retardance by tilting the crystal against the beam.

Alternatively, liquid crystal modulators and Pockels cells offer electrically controlled degrees of retardance, providing additional options for adjusting polarization states in optical systems.
