Unlike the fiber itself, which contains a waveguide, the end caps allow light to propagate as beams that expand towards the ends.

This results in a high return loss, which is essential for applications like fiber amplifiers, fiber lasers, and superluminescent sources.

High return loss prevents light reflected back into the fiber core from being amplified again, which could otherwise damage components or degrade performance. This suppression is critical for maintaining the efficiency and safety of high-gain fiber amplifiers and laser systems.
